It is important to note that the Retina display is not an actual display technology. Rather, it is a mere marketing terminology used by Apple to convey a particular marketing message : A display panel having a resolution and pixel density high enough to make individual pixels invisible from a normal viewing distance, thus resulting in the reproduction of sharp graphical images with smooth curves.
Despite the absence of an actual technical standard and detailed specifications, the Retina display is not mere marketing hype. Products equipped with this display offer numerous advantages that non-Retina products. Of course, there are some compromises and drawbacks. The subsequent discussion lists down the pros and cons of the Retina display. One of the advantages of Retina display centers on providing a better visual experience, particularly by displaying crisp and detailed images with smooth edges and fine print.
Panels with low resolution and low pixel density reproduce murky images due to noticeable individual pixels. Devices equipped with a Retina display are more suited for consuming contents such as videos, images and graphics, websites and web articles, eBooks, and games. These devices are also better suited for creative pursuits such as graphic design and photo editing due to their capacity to reproduce images with finer details.
Compared to display panels with lower resolution, a Retina display has the capacity to display more information or content without diminishing image quality to its higher resolution and pixel density. This means running apps or windows side-by-side and better image scalability.
For smaller panels featuring the Retina display, particularly an iPhone or an iPad Mini, more display information means better web browsing experience, eBook reading, and video content consumption. The normal viewing distance is an important part of this equation, because the closer you hold the device, the smaller the individual pixels need to be before they become indistinguishable from one another.
Apple considers the normal viewing distance of a smartphone to be between 10 and 12 inches, and the normal viewing distance for a tablet is around 15 inches. The Retina display distinction is important because any higher screen resolution doesn't provide extra viewing benefits.
Once the human eye can no longer distinguish individual pixels, the display is as clear as it can be. And, higher screen resolutions require more graphics power, which depletes the battery faster. So exceeding a Retina display can actually detract from the device.
The confusing part about a Retina display is that it comes with many different screen resolutions. A 4K display is generally a x resolution regardless of its size, but a Retina display's resolution usually changes based on its size. The 9. The A PPI of around or above is key to achieving that Retina display range in tablets. Apple thought that keeping the resolution the same from a compatibility standpoint was more important than the extra drain on the battery, but the display itself would look about the same with a smaller resolution.
In terms of buying a tablet , the 4K designation should only be a concern if you primarily use the device to watch television and stream video. The real number to look for is the display's pixels-per-inch PPI. PPI is based on screen size and screen resolution. Most tablets now display it in their specifications. You can see a list of broadcast TV networks and cable providers with apps for the iPad.
A 4K resolution on a tablet should generally be considered only on tablets that measure 12 inches diagonally or more. Smaller tablets with a 4K resolution are jumping on the bandwagon for a display that uses more battery power but doesn't provide any clearer resolution than an iPad. This is the same resolution as the 9. Samsung marketed this Galaxy Tab S3 as a 4K tablet because it can accept 4K video even though it cannot output it onto its display. This basically takes marketing buzz words into the bait-and-switch area.
It also means you should be skeptical of any tablet referring to itself as 4K. While 3D TVs have proved to be a bit of a fad, 4K television sets are likely here to stay, but it may take longer than some think for it to become the true standard. It takes more space to store a 4K video and, more importantly, it takes more bandwidth to stream 4K.
It currently takes around Megabytes-per-second Mbps to stream p high definition video. If you take into account the need to buffer and deal with the varying speeds of Wi-Fi, 8 Mbps would be more ideal. Currently, it takes between 12 Mbps and 15 Mbps to stream 4K video, with the ideal connection being around 20 Mbps.
For many people, that would take most of the bandwidth they get from their internet provider. Even those with 50 Mbps connections would feel a major slowdown if two people on their network tried to watch a 4K movie at the same time. While it might be possible to work around the issue, a company like Netflix or Hulu Plus would see a huge increase in the cost to stream video. The internet might become unusable if there were widespread adoption of streaming 4K video.
So, we're not quite there yet. But from a pricing standpoint, 4K televisions are getting closer and closer to that consumer level. It might actually take a little longer for internet providers to be ready for it, but they'll get there. Another feature of the Apple True Tone display is the ability to detect ambient light and alter the shade of white shown on the screen to mimic the effect of light in the real world. This is similar to how a sheet of paper might look more white under shade and more yellow directly under the sun.
If you're an avid film and television buff who primarily uses a tablet for streaming video, you might want to invest in 4K. It provides zero benefits to other forms of media like e-books, though, and there are virtually no 4K video games on mobile platforms.

On non-Retina displays even the most beautiful magazine app is still a bit computer-y: the screen can't deliver text that's as sharp as printed text, or images as sharp as printed ones. A Retina display can. You're no longer reading a magazine on a screen; you're simply reading a magazine. It's more effective than on the iPhone, too, because the bigger screen means you're not scrolling every four words.
Email and ebooks are easier to read, app interfaces look more realistic, photos are brighter and sharper and Flipboard feels like it's been sent from the future. When you think about it, it's really quite extraordinary. It's also extraordinarily difficult to make. However, Samsung who make the iPad screen have recently announced a 5-inch screen with a full p resolution.
This weighs in at a mighty pixels per inch but isn't currently available in any products. Achieving retina resolutions with current TFT technology isn't easy. The more tightly you pack the pixels, the lower the display's aperture ratio becomes. The aperture ratio is the ratio between the pixel's transparent area and the whole pixel area including wiring; the smaller the ratio, the less light gets through.
To compensate for this, Apple has been forced to double the number of LEDs in the iPad's backlight, which uses 72 LEDs and requires two and a half times more power than the backlight in the iPad 2. The other issue with Retina displays is that the more tightly you pack the pixels, the more likely you are to encounter unwanted capacitive coupling, which is when signals jump from one component to another and cause interference and image artefacts. To address this Apple has used Super High Aperture SHA technology, which places a layer of resin between the pixels and signal lines to keep everything in its right place.
By area, every iPad is made primarily of battery - and the new iPad has the biggest one yet, which is why it's slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor. Driving those extra LEDs requires lots of power, and to achieve the same battery life as an iPad 2 the new iPad's battery has been upped from 25 watt-hours to The new screen isn't the only culprit - 4G mobile broadband radios, which are available in the new iPad, are infamous battery hogs too - but there's no doubt that Retina displays are more power hungry than non-Retina ones.
The quad-core graphics in the A5X processor and the RAM increase from MB to 1GB are largely to drive the display too: without them, the new iPad's performance wouldn't be anywhere near as impressive. Retina apps can be hungry as well, not for power but for storage space.
The difference isn't just higher resolution textures, icons and media, but there is a real danger that for graphically rich apps, Retina-friendly content could quickly overwhelm even the roomiest new iPad. The problem is particularly annoying when an app uses pictures, such as JPEG images, to render text. Not only is that bad for accessibility - VoiceOver can't read it out, it can't be copied and so on - but it's bad for app size: the new iPad has four times the pixels of the iPad 2, and that means images need to be four times larger to look good.
That could be disastrous for apps such as some digital magazines, whose creators export the whole publication as a series of images. As Christopher Phin, editor of our Retina-friendly and distinctly un-bloated sister title Tap! If your issue is MB now, an issue built for Retina display could be 2. Otherwise there are going to be a lot of unhappy iPad owners out there. Even if you don't subscribe to digital magazines, the Retina display could cause you some storage problems: videos and photos that have been optimised for previous iPads running x resolutions don't look so good on the new iPad, and that means you'll have to decide whether upping the quality is worth sacrificing space for.
If you think you'll be watching a lot of HD video or storing lots of high-resolution photographs, you might regret buying a new iPad with just 16GB of storage space. It'll be interesting to see whether badly designed Retina-friendly apps also cause problems for older iPad users.
We hope not. The Retina display is the best screen you'll find on any device, and the difference it makes is dramatic. Once you've seen it, you'll want it - so if you're happy with your existing iPad, you should probably steer clear of the Apple Store. Check out how the new iPad 3 display got on when it went head-to-head with the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity in our video below.
